Flights & Airport Tips: Traveling Smarter and Calmer ✈️
Finding the right flight and navigating airports doesn’t have to be stressful. Over the years, I’ve learned that a little planning — and a lot of patience — goes a long way. Here are the tips and habits I use every time I travel, whether it’s a quick getaway or an international adventure.
Finding the Right Flight (Not Just the Cheapest)
With all the internet tools available today, I use every one of them to find the best flight that fits our needs. While price is important, I’ve learned that comfort and convenience matter just as much.
These days, I avoid:
- Red-eye flights
- Getting up at 3:00 a.m. to catch a plane
- Flights with multiple connections
That said, there are exceptions — especially for international travel. For example, flying from Seattle to Barcelona, Spain often means dealing with longer travel times and connections. In those cases, I focus on the most reasonable route rather than the shortest or cheapest one.
I usually start with sites like Expedia to see which airlines fly from my city and which offer direct flights. Direct flights reduce the chances of delayed, lost, or damaged luggage — and honestly, they’re just easier.
One important note: Southwest Airlines doesn’t show up on Expedia, so I always check their website separately.
Airline Rewards & Using Points Wisely
I have rewards accounts with all the major airlines, even if I only expect to fly with them once. You never know — a long flight can earn enough points for a future discount or even a free or very cheap flight later on.
When booking, I compare:
- Paying entirely with points
- Combining points and dollars
- Using points just for an upgrade
Sometimes points are absolutely worth it. Other times, after comparing taxes and fees, it makes more sense to pay cash and save the points for later. I always do the math before deciding.
Watch Out for Extra Fees
When comparing prices, I look closely at additional fees:
- Carry-on charges
- Checked luggage fees
- Seat selection fees
Some of the cheaper airlines charge for everything individually. By the time you add it all up, you may end up paying the same — or more — than you would with a more prominent airline. I make sure to tally everything into the final fare so I know the real cost.
And yes — I often query ChatGPT to help compare options or double-check my thinking!
Flexibility Can Pay Off
If my schedule allows, I’m open to giving up my seat when airlines ask for volunteers. More than once, I’ve received a round-trip ticket to use later, and sometimes the rebooked flight even comes with a better seat (hello, first class!) than the one I originally paid for.
Getting Through the Airport with Grace
Airports can be unpredictable, so I try to travel well-hydrated, rested, and with patience packed in my carry-on. I also pack enough reading, video and game material to keep myself entertained during the flights or long waits at the airport. I carry a portable charger as you cannot always find an outlet nearby.
Flight delays and cancellations happen. I’ve been stuck in airports where everyone’s flight was canceled. In those moments:
- Being kind to gate agents truly matters — they’re doing their best
- A snarky attitude helps no one, especially fellow travelers who are just as frustrated
If the line at the gate is long, I often call the airline while standing in line to see if a phone agent can help reroute us faster. I stay in line unless:
- We’re successfully rebooked
- We need food or hotel vouchers
Accessibility & Boarding Tips
My favorite airlines are Delta and Alaska, especially for their service and reliability.
When booking tickets, I always request a wheelchair for my husband. If it’s a long walk through the airport, I’ll request one for myself as well — not because I need it, but because I can’t keep up with him while pulling luggage behind his chair.
If it’s a short trek, we don’t use the wheelchair. However, requesting one ensures the gate agents know we need extra boarding time, which we absolutely do. That small accommodation makes the entire experience calmer and smoother.
Final Thoughts
Travel doesn’t have to be perfect to be wonderful. Flights may change, plans may shift, and airports may test your patience — but a thoughtful approach and a flexible mindset can make all the difference.
Plan smart, stay kind, and remember: the journey is part of the adventure 🌍✨
